OPINION

Last week I had the chance to see Bird Box and I'm one of the 45,000,000 million Netflix customers who spent the afternoon watching this entertaining film, starring Sandra Bullock, an actress who pulls a lot of the box office and is a renowned Hollywood star.

Blind (I like the English title Bird Box better) is an entertaining film because it has all the elements to be so, with an interesting direct plot and no sub-plots to distract you from the main thread of the film.

However, we can't ask for more because "A ciegas" is not one of those films that will be part of the story; as I said, a film well made, well directed and well performed by the American actress.

The truth is that Sandra Bullock together with Netflix has made a good business and have taken advantage of its potential to make this film a success.

In short, a movie to grab a fist of roscas (popcorn) and sit on the sofa to spend an entertaining afternoon with Sandra Bullock, but nothing more.

El Minerva, 85 años de historia

Pocos pueden decir que llevan 85 años en la Vela Latina Canaria y pocos pueden presumir de haber estado, al pie del cañón, en todas las competiciones desde las primeras que se celebraron en los años treinta, cuando la sociedad deportiva Ahemón comenzó a organizar los primeros campeonatos de botes durante los II República.

El Minerva, construido por el Maestro Juan Marrero Medina, siempre estuvo ahí desde el comienzo en los años treinta, cuando se configuró, de forma definitiva, este deporte tal y como lo conocemos en la actualidad. También estuvo en las épocas más duras de nuestro deporte, cuando después de la guerra nadie quería competir y estuvo ahí, navegando y compitiendo, hasta bien entrados los años cuarenta.

Después hubo que retirarse. Las circunstancias mandaban y los Minervistas guardaron a su bote en los almacenes de la Woermann, pero a partir del año 1957 comenzaron los entusiastas de los botes a movilizarse para volver a la bahía, para bolinear en busca de la victoria.

Ahí estuvo, nuevamente, el Minerva, de la mano de Agustín Valido y Manuel Cabrera, La Fiera, que despertaron de su letargo a La Escoba y la engalanaron para competir en octubre de 1961 junto con los botes históricos Porteño y Morales.

Desde esa fecha el Minerva nunca ha dejado de competir, disfrutando de sus mejores épocas, pero también soportando las peores, pero siempre con dignidad y pundonor, respetando al rival, sabiendo que en el túnel no hay grandes ni pequeños.

85 años nos observan que son un honor para los Minervistas, para llevar con orgullo una trayectoria de respeto y amor por un deporte, 85 años que son la luz que nos guía para alcanzar los objetivos que nos hemos propuesto.

¿Qué he visto en Netflix? Cómo defender a un asesino. Primera temporada

OPINIÓN

Justo ayer terminé de ver la primera temporada de Cómo defender a un asesino en Netflix. Lo cierto es que la tenía en mi «Lista» para verla, pero no me decidía porque tenía otras series que, a priori, me llamaban más la atención. Sin embargo, vi un comentario positivo en Facebook sobre ella y, estando libre de series, pues comencé a verla y desde el primer capítulo me enganchó.

Me gustó mucho el ritmo que tiene, sin dejarte que te tomes un respiro, con continuos problemas que los protagonistas tienen que resolver. También me pareció acertado el juego de los flashbacks que, en este caso, su función no es otra que de enganche, de ponerte el caramelo en la boca, lo saborees y luego te lo quitan para terminar dándotelo, capítulo a capítulo.

Con que esta primera temporada está bastante bien y la serie cumple con su función, que no es otra que entretenerte y mantenerte con la atención puesta en el desarrollo de la trama.

Vamos a ver qué nos depara la segunda temporada, esperando que se resuelvan las cuestiones que se quedaron abiertas al finalizar la primera temporada.

What have I seen on Netflix? Bandersnatch

Before yesterday I finished watching Bandersnatch on Netflix and the truth is that I was very surprised when the Playstation controller (I see Netflix through a Playstation III just use it for that) began to vibrate and wondering if I had understood how the film worked, I said yes, but the truth is that I had no idea, although when I had to choose whether to have breakfast Frosties or Sugar Puff, I understood what the film was about.

I immediately thought of Julio Cortazar's novel "Rayuela", which has a similar scheme, in which you can read the chapters in the order you create and their endings will be different.

Netflix has made with Bandersnatch a risky bet, a proposal that many will like and others not so much. I'm in the middle. I admit that I liked the film, especially its interactive approach and that, somehow, you are part of the film and that the endings depend on your decisions, although the interactive game, to me at least, I get tired. I have to admit that I'm not much of a game, and maybe that's where you have to look for the answer.

On the other hand the Black Mirror series has its stamp of identity and that is none other than future technologies and their consequences and Bandersnatch moves away from this approach, although if we spin very fine we could find some fit in that stamp of identity.

So Bandersnatch is a film that has to be seen, there is no doubt about that and its lace in the series is another singing.

We are not in spring, I know, we are in the early winter, but the Canary Islands are very grateful and since a little rain falls and a pinch the sun comes out (the sun always comes out in these lands) the countryside blooms in all its splendor and the flowers do not wait for spring to show us their beauty.

Then the fields, the ravines and any place where there is a piece of land, the vegetation does not lose the opportunity and are filled with greenery.

It is true that temperature helps because in the middle of winter we rarely have temperatures below zero, if at all in the peaks it reaches zero degrees, but on the islands the temperature ranges between 15 and 24 degrees.

So the plants also have spring in winter and bloom when conditions allow it, as is the case of the white tajinastes, which, in many cases, are blooming, like this one I found along with others in the ravine of Tamaraceite.

The tajinaste (Echium decaisnei) is a shrub endemic to the Canary Islands, there are several types and can be found on all islands and its maximum flowering is in spring, but, as is the case, can bloom in winter.

In this ravine there are many white tajinastes and all were blooming or beginning to bloom; a spectacle I say to be photographed.

¿Qué he visto en Netflix? Velvet Buzzsaw

El pasado domingo vi Velvet Buzzsaw en Netflix y me gustó bastante, aunque tiene un arranque muy lento para mi gusto y la trama no se pone interesante hasta que no transcurrido media hora, pero esto no le resta interés.
Me gustó mucho la trama que relaciona el mundo paranormal con el comercio del arte y, al mismo tiempo, pone sobre la mesa el trapicheo que hay en el mundo del arte que, en muchas ocasiones, es despiadado y solo busca rentabilizar los beneficios al precio que sea. 
Sobre estos mimbres se desarrolla la trama principal, que resulta interesante desde que una de las protagonistas, descubre los cuadros de un pintor con un pasado turbio y trágico, que fallece por causas naturales en el edificio en que ella vive y pretende hacer negocios con las obras del pintor fallecido.
A partir de ese momento la película toma un cariz sugestivo con la aparición de las primeras muertes que hacen que te quedes a esperar cómo se resuelve y termina la película.
En definitiva, una película para disfrutar en cualquier tarde. No les defraudará.

Yesterday I told you that my sisters, my son and I visited the Charco Azuland on the way I came across some flowers, but above all this white flower with its pink center caught my attention. Isn't it beautiful? 

Yes, there is no doubt that it is; that unpolluted white color that contrasts with the pink that is in its center, as if the pink, through a magical process, were transforming into the white of its petals.

Well, for those reasons, don't hesitate to take a picture of it. As I told you yesterday, the day accompanied the clear sky without a cloud, the ideal temperature to walk and, why not, to take out my mobile phone and immortalize some flowers. The blasted sky contributed to the fact that light was not a problem, but a necessary collaborator for the photograph to go well.

The good thing is that this beautiful flower, the Vinca de Madagascar (Catharanthus roseus), was in a place in the shade, so it did not get direct light and allowed me to get a close-up with the light needed for this purpose.

Su recuperación era cuestión de tiempo, de ir cerrando las heridas, de omitir los errores del pasado y, también, de dejarse llevar, como una rama que baja por un riachuelo sin saber dónde irá a parar. Yo sabía de su energía, de su fuerza por seguir luchando, por conseguir los objetivos que se había propuesto, que su parada era solo para coger fuerzas y seguir avanzando. 
Aquella mañana le regalé una flor, una margarita salvaje que crecía en nuestro jardín. La saqué con cuidado con todas sus raíces, con algo de tierra y la trasplanté a una maceta. Se la regalé porque sabía que le gustaría, que le levantaría el ánimo tener aquella flor salvaje en su habitación. Ella la cogió en sus manos, me sonrió y la colocó junto a la ventana. Ahí encontrará la armonía necesaria para crecer, me dijo. 
Luego bajamos a desayunar y se sentó junto a mi lado. 
—¿Ya estás preparada? 
—No lo sé. Nunca se está preparado para comenzar un nuevo camino. Además, después de dejarlo todo, no es fácil empezar de nuevo.
—Ya sabes eso que dicen, un paso y luego otro. No hay otra manera de empezar.
—Sí, la teoría la sé, pero lo complicado es dar ese paso. A veces tengo la sensación de tener los pies clavados al suelo.
—Entonces tendrás que comprarte un martillo de orejas.
—No te entiendo. 
—Sí, para quitarte los clavos.
—Es una metáfora.
—Sí, lo sé, mi martillo también lo es. Los clavos necesitan martillos y en tu caso solo tienes que buscar la herramienta adecuada que te ayude a dar ese primer paso.
—Está claro, en la vida hay que tener herramientas. Si tienes herramientas estamos salvados.
—Hoy podría ser ese día; el día que das el primer paso. Podrías empezar por borrar los primeros diez artículos de tu blog, después, al día siguiente, seguir con otros diez, hasta que no quede ningún artículo.
—Y cuando acabe con todo, ¿a qué me voy a dedicar? 
—A vivir, que no es poca cosa. A levantarte por las mañanas a dedicarte a la vida contemplativa. 
—No sé si podré. Son muchos años escribiendo todos los días.
—Vivir no necesita entrenamiento. Solo necesitas vivir. Tienes que dejar atrás lo que no te satisface. Siempre podrás volver a escribir. 
—Bien, eso haré.
Terminó su desayuno, se sentó delante de su portátil y borró sus primeros artículos. Se levantó y vi que lloraba. Luego salió al jardín y se sentó en una tumbona. Había dado el primer paso de su nueva vida.

Walk to Charco Azul

A few months ago I was in the Charco Azul, a place that I had heard of, but had never visited. It was a family visit, since we were my two sisters, the oldest and the youngest, and my son. 

El Charco Azul is near the Risco, a town that belongs to the municipality of Agaete and you will meet him on the way to the village of the village of San Nicolás. 

We arrive at Risco before eleven in the morning. The day accompanied because it was sunny, there was no wind and the temperature was about twenty degrees. Perfect for a walk without complications and very easy to do, although, with rainy weather, you have to be cautious and leave it for another day because when it rains, those ravines have a lot of strength and can be dangerous.

We crossed the Risco neighborhood and, following the directions of the friendly neighbors and the signs, we arrived at the path that would lead us to our destination. The first thing that surprised us was the green of the vegetation and the flowering of some plants and it is that our land is grateful; I remembered that last November it rained with enthusiasm in Gran Canaria and its result was the explosion of nature that we were attending.

When we arrived at the base of the ravine we already began to hear the sound of the water and we could see the streams of crystalline water that ran down the ravine as a result of past rains.

We continued climbing up the ravine, following the path and with our destination always in sight, because we had it located, in the form of a white cliff that could be seen in the background. 

Halfway we sat down to enjoy the sound of the water running through the streams, which is not very common in our islands, and the song of the birds, especially the song of the Canario del Monte which was wonderful.

Then we continued, always accompanied by the small streams of crystalline water, then we passed the most difficult area and, finally, we arrived at the Charco Azul which was at the base of a large cliff called Tamadaba.

The Blue Pond was full and overflowing because water kept falling from the peaks. We were thinking of taking a bath, but we touched the water and it was very cold, so we let it be. We stayed there for a while to recharge our batteries, drink water, eat some nuts and enjoy the incredible scenery that nature offered us.

Todos los días llegaba a la misma hora. Esperaba a que abriera la puerta a las cinco de la tarde. Saludaba don Ambrosio, el cura, metía el dedo índice en la pila bautismal, mojaba un poco el dedo, se hacía una cruz en el centro de la frente y sentía como el agua bendita le limpiaba el alma. Luego se sentaba en el banco que estaba en la quinta fila, a la izquierda del altar mayor.
Allí se quedaba en silencio, cerraba los ojos y se dormía. Era el único sitio donde podía dormir a pierna suelta. A las siete lo despertaban los murmullos de los feligreses que entraban a la misa de las siete. Entonces se levantaba, se acercaba al altar mayor, se arrodillaba y se marchaba por el pasillo central de la iglesia de su barrio.
Ya en la calle paseaba por la calle mayor hasta que comenzaba a oscurecer. Luego se dirigía hacia la biblioteca central de su ciudad, cogía el libro que estaba leyendo, subía a la última planta, buscaba algún rincón libre, se sentaba y ahí se quedaba leyendo hasta que el sueño lo vencía. Su cuerpo se había acostumbrado a dormir en aquella posición un tanto incómoda, pero tenía que pagar ese precio porque nunca le gustó dormir en la calle.
Se despertaba a las cinco de la mañana, iba al baño, se lavaba la cara y volvía a su sitio a seguir leyendo, hasta que, a las siete y media, salía a ponerse en la fila del comedor social para tomarse un desayuno caliente.
Luego volvía a deambular por las calles hasta que llegara la hora de comer e iba al otro comedor social, el que estaba cerca de la playa. Allí le permitían comer dos platos, darse una ducha y lavar su ropa.
Al atardecer volvía a la iglesia con algo de esperanza en los bolsillos, que era lo único que le quedaba.

What have I seen on Netflix? Rome of Alfonso Cuarón

OPINION

Today I finished seeing Alfonso Cuarón's Rome in Netflix and the truth is that when I began to see it I didn't have much hope that I would like it, but as the film progressed, it ended up conquering me, not only the story of the two women, the domestic worker and her boss, but also the way Cuarón tells us a common story, but with a depth that leaves you stunned.

Then the black-and-white filming, which takes you, from the first minute, to get in line with what the director wants to tell you, the sequence shots that are perfect, photography is not left behind and the masterful use of cinematographic space.

Then there's what Cuarón tells us behind the scenes, part of the political and social history of Mexico in the 1970s that brings us a little closer to understanding Mexico today.

In short, a film not to be missed, see it with tranquility and enjoy all its art, which has it and a lot.

¿Qué he visto en Netflix? Polar

OPINIÓN

El pasado domingo vi Polar en Netflix que está basada en la novela gráfica de Víctor Santos, que tuvo mucho éxito y que se ha llevado a la pantalla para intentar emular el éxito del comic. 
La película es trepidante de principio a fin, con una trama principal sin recovecos, que no te dejará respirar hasta el final, con mucha sangre y mucha violencia. Me recordó a las películas de Tarantino, pero Polar va un pasito más allá. No digo más.
Ya dije que lo más destacado de esta película es el ritmo, pero también lo es la fotografía, como si hubieran querido trasladar el cómic a la pantalla y cierto que lo han conseguido.
La parte más débil, desde mi punto de vista, es el guion porque es muy previsible y sabes, a grandes rasgos, qué ocurrirá en el filme, pero esta circunstancia no le resta interés y te aseguro que te pasarás los 118 minutos que dura la cinta con los ojos pegados a la pantalla.
Polar no es una película que pasará a la historia, eso está claro, pero si es una película entretenida para los amantes del cine de estilo Tarantino.

What have I seen on Netflix? Sick Note

OPINION

A few days ago I saw the first season of sick leave on Netflix. A first season that you can see in an afternoon because there are only six chapters and each one has an average duration of 23 minutes, minus the first that lasts 45.

The truth is that the series lets itself be loved and has such a frantic rhythm that you can't stop watching it until you reach the final chapter.

Another aspect that I liked about the series was its eccentric, humorous and irreverent approach, with that point of madness that Don Johnson puts, who plays Kenny West, who is the boss of the protagonist Daniel Glass, who plays the famous protagonist of Harry Potter, Rupert Grint.

SYNOPSIS

Daniel Glass is a young man who works for the health insurance company in which he is not very happy. After a medical examination, Dr. Ian Glennis mistakenly diagnosed him with a cancer that would lead him to panic and then, when he is told it is a mistake, he will be forced to hide the truth so as not to lose his job.
