What have I seen on Netflix? Triple frontier

Last Sunday I saw Triple Frontier on Netflix and the truth is that I was expecting a film with a little more quality, after all the advertising that Netflix has done to publicize its premiere.

To tell the truth, the result was not entirely satisfactory, with a plot a thousand times repeated and with an outcome just as expected, with little or nothing that would propose you to keep an eye on the screen, because the film leaves many things by the way and one of them is expectation.

The UN warns us: the planet is at the limit

The UN is quite clear and has put on the table what has been said for decades: either we change the way we live or the planet goes to shit in a few years' time.

We humans have always behaved like the mambo kings on the planet, importing very little of what was happening around us, exploiting, right and left, all the resources we had within our reach and even those we didn't have in our hands.

This over-exploitation of the natural environment is leading us into a dead end, a point of no return from which we cannot escape and which will lead to destruction sooner rather than later.

The UN, in its latest report presented in Nairobi, warns us of the dangers that threaten the human race, dangers that have not originated by spontaneous generation, but are the consequence of human activity. Problems such as global warming, overexploitation of food or plastics in the seas are directly related to the health indices of humanity.

We cannot wait any longer, the warnings are on the table. Governments must take drastic measures to stop the rampant deterioration of our planet, and citizens must push for governments to take the necessary measures to stop its destruction.

As the UN says, we have the technology and resources to make this world a more sustainable place, a place where we can live in tune with what surrounds us.

To change course is in our hand; to head for the seafood, as they say in my land, or for a better future for us and our children.

The dictatorship of the automobile

There are cities that are not made for bicycles, as is the case of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, a city where the car is its owner and lord and is the cause of the daily traffic jams and the discomfort of thousands of citizens.

You don't have to walk much to realize what I'm saying, at the first change you find cars everywhere, here and there, without leaving us almost breathless and such a number of cars harm us when we move, ruining the effectiveness of other means of transport because they become entangled in that car spider web that makes them ineffective.

The City Council of this city has insisted, with success, in establishing a set of bicycle lanes that cross the lower part of the city, to try to make this metropolis, a friendlier city and also more sustainable.

Because it is clear that when a city bets on bicycles, it is a city that bets on its citizens and there are many examples in the world, but also here in Spain. One outstanding case is the city of Seville, which I have made a firm commitment to the use of bicycles and the results could not be more encouraging.

The city of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria has begun to create its network of bicycle lanes and some are already raising their voices because these bicycle lanes are taking away parking spaces and here enters, roundly, the dictatorship of the car, which is imposed on anything that is not move without this four-wheeled vehicle.

And the arguments cannot be more pilgrims, saying that they are bicycle lanes that nobody is going to use, but it turns out that, in the cities where bicycle lanes have been implemented, in the end they end up flooding with bicycles, because moving by bicycle along safe lanes is a more than feasible option and the citizen ends up understanding that it is faster to move by bicycle than by car.

I have been going to work by bicycle for more than a year now and I have to say that the experience is satisfactory, not only because I am contributing, with my grain of sand, to reducing pollution, but I am also helping to reduce the number of motor vehicles in this city and to improve my health.

Without a doubt, when the network of bicycle lanes is finished, this city will take a step forward, a step towards modernity, with the unequivocal direction of having a city for citizens and not a city for cars

Minerva: prow to the future

We are less than a week away from the start of the season of Vela Latina Canaria and the boats are getting ready, soaking their hulls and maneuvers, with the first edges against the wind, pulling the sheet, to get as close as possible to the wind to seek the spirit and soul of the boats, which were born to face the wind and become the first.

The Minerva has not been left behind. This season we have been in the water since the second week of February, with the renewed hopes of going to the Tunnel to compete as we have always done, with the humility and veteranship that the 85 years of existence have given us, in which we have been up, in the middle and, also, down, but we have never lost the attitude of going out to compete no matter how strong the winds were; the Minerva has always been, is and will be there.

So here we are with the bow looking to the future, but also looking to the past to learn from our mistakes and know that objectives and goals are achieved with work, with a lot of teamwork. There is no other choice.

In the end we are left with the moments lived, those that led us to victory, but also to defeat, and those moments will continue to shape our history, that history of which we feel so proud.

On other occasions I have commented that nature never ceases to amaze me and some time ago I came across this image in a park of Ingenio.

The image is clear, a tree that hugged a palm tree to stay standing and not lose its balance and continue living and growing, although later, with the passage of time, ended up dying and the palm tree continued its way to the skies.

How many times have we needed someone like that palm tree! A friendly hand to help us, to hold us when we are about to fall into the abyss and to save us.

The sad thing is that we don't always find that log to hold on to, to keep us on our feet and follow our way with a firm floor and we get lost and, many times, we don't know how to get back.

Although it can also have another reading, that of impossible love, that misunderstood love, in the style of Romeo and Juliet; Montescos and Capuletos who did the unspeakable to prevent their love.

That embrace can mean the unconditional love of the tree for the palm tree, a love without any condition; only the natural and great love.

In short, nature gives us lessons because it knew, they have been learning from their mistakes for millions of years and we must learn from it.
